Melanoma – Know Your ABC’s and Beyond

When you consider the dangers of cancer, you might think of body parts such as the breast or the lungs before you think of the skin, but skin cancer is a serious problem. And if you do think of skin cancer, you might worry first about your face or another spot that is frequently exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Nonetheless, melanoma of the foot is a serious problem. When caught early, melanoma of the foot is treatable. Read on to learn about signs and symptoms and what you can do to stay safe.

Melanoma typically appears as a spot somewhere on the foot, so inspect feet regularly including on the soles and between the toes. Be especially alert to any mole with characteristics that can be remembered with the acronym ABCDE:

• A is for asymmetry. Most spots on your body are symmetrical. Each side is a mirror of the others. When one is not, it is of concern.

• B is for border. If your mole has irregular borders, it should be examined by a podiatrist as soon as possible.

• C is for color. A mole that is made up of different colors is a potential sign of melanoma.

• D is for diameter. Most moles are small. If yours is bigger than a few millimeters, get it checked out.

• E is for evolving. Moles are not supposed to change. If yours does, schedule an appointment with your podiatrist right away.

Other warning signs include swelling, redness, oozing, or bleeding around a mole or bump. If you notice any of these signs, do not delay. Schedule a visit with a podiatrist like Eric Kosofsky, DPM and Robert Rutstein, DPM right away. Your doctor will examine your foot and perform a biopsy if appropriate. Test results will help your doctor determine the best course of treatment.
