Shopping for Summer Sandals? Make Smart Choices!

Mid-summer is a great time to take advantage of sales as retailers clear out summer stock to make room for new fall styles. You can get a great pair of new shoes at significant savings. But that low price is really just a waste if your new sandals aren’t stylish, supportive, and comfortable.

Here are three tips from Eric Kosofsky, DPM and Robert Rutstein, DPM to help guide your choice:

  •  Select sandals constructed of leather, fabric, or woven synthetic mesh. Avoid footwear made of plastic, rubber, or other materials that trap sweat and make it hard for feet to “breathe.” These will create a hospitable environment for toenail fungus and other infections. They will also increase the likelihood of unpleasant foot odor.

  • Save the flip-flops for occasional trips to the beach. For everyday use, stick with a well-made pair of sandals that offer arch support. Prevent falls that can cause foot and ankle injuries. Choose sandals with adjustable straps to customize your fit and keep the shoes securely on your feet.

  • Do you know that foot size can change with age? If it’s been more than a year since your feet were last measured, skip the online shopping and head to a brick-and-mortar retailer. Ask the salesperson to use a Brannock device to check the current length and width of your feet and buy shoes to fit the size you really are, not to size you used to be.

If changes in foot shape or foot pain is making it hard for you to buy a new pair of shoes, a visit to your foot doctor is the first step on the road to recovery.
